CNN reports that NY Governor Cuomo has announced that a 1-containment area will be established in New Rochelle, NY to help control the spread of the coronavirus in New York State. New Rochelle — with 98 cases (as of this writing)– is a coronavirus “hot spot” posing a severe enough threat to require, in the governor’s words, “drastic action.”
The National Guard will be deployed to this area to assist in cleaning areas and delivering meals to those affected.
The containment area, approximately 1 mile in diameter includes New Rochelle and eastern portions of Westchester towns Eastchester and Tuckahoe. The containment duration is time-limited from Thursday, March 12th to Wednesday, March 25th. Schools, community facilities, and houses of worship within the containment zone will be closed during this area. But businesses will remain open, and no street closures have been planned. Individuals will not be prevented from entering or leaving New Rochelle or the other affected towns during the containment period.
The article quotes the Governor as stating that “this is a matter of life and death.”
